Day 58 - These are familiar roads

Day 58 - Duncannon to York, PA - 53 miles - 1096 feet of elevation gain

Our goal was to leave the hotel by 7:30am to roll 2 miles down the road for a Sheetz breakfast. However, as we were going to start someone had a flat tire, I guess the morning pump-up didn’t uncover the flat 🤷🏻‍♀️. It took a little while because it turned into a tire change as well. My uncle text me from the road during his bike across America trip to tell me to buy this tire tool. I listened, and that tool has come in handy more times on this trip, especially for new tires.

After breakfast at Sheetz, we had our first stint on route 22 for 2 miles across the bridge. It was busy but not too crazy. I was in the lead and just wanted to get off, so I was cruising along. We got off the first exit and hit a parallel road for a few miles. Then we got back on Route 22 to go through the “narrows,” which actually went just fine. Then we exited the highway and onto city roads and the Harrisburg green belt trail. The trail went along the river, which was really nice. The trails are a nice mental break from thinking about traffic and potholes. The green belt took us to Steelton where we jumped back on the road. Here is where we had another flat, which turned into another flat because the wire from a truck tire wasn’t discovered after the first flat.

Our first water stop was at a Turkey Hill, where the wire was removed and the flat was fixed again. We left here and passed the Harrisburg airport. Then got on route 441 before getting on the rail trail for the last 18 miles to our lunch stop. This rail trail is familiar territory for all of us, because during the regular LIFECYCLES rides we meet at Riverfront Park on Tuesdays. We remarked how our speed was fast for what used to be our rides, but now it seemed we were going slow. It’s just funny how our perspective and ability have changed over these 2 months.

At the Columbia River Crossing we were greeted by some family members and LIFECYCLES folks. It was nice to see familiar faces and we had a chance to talk about the trip. We left the lunch spot and had one good hill climb to get to our lodging for the night. Lee and Marcie opened up their home, fed us, and allowed parents and siblings to come over for an ice cream social. Special thanks to Turkey Hill Dairy for donating drinks and ice cream for our party. We allowed families to visit for a while, and then we called all of the boys to the front for a Q&A time. It was fun seeing them interact together to tell stories of the trip.

Two more ride days until we wrap this thing up!
