Stairway to Annapurna Base Camp - Day 1
Our day began in Kathmandu with an early flight to Pokhara. We boarded a small twin propeller plane, so small, in fact, that it required bending in half to walk down the aisle to reach our seats. Once in the air, our flight path afforded views of snow capped mountains piercing through the clouds.
Pokhara greeted us with flowers blooming and a bright sky. A jeep waited outside the gate to carry us 3 hours to the trail head. We meandered on narrow mountain roads through villages, passing cars, motorcycles, and buses along the way.
Passed the checkpoint, we drove a short distance to the beginning of our journey on the stairway to Annapurna Base Camp. Immediately we began ascending stairs and didn't stop until our resting place for the night, Ulleri.
At lunch, I asked about an item on the menu called Tibetan Bread. Turned out to be the best thing on the menu, and something we ordered for every meal. It was like a pretzel met a funnel cake and formed a round puff of goodness!
We reached our first teahouse and nestled in, after climbing about 4,000 steps, we were ready for some rest. Day 1 was amazing, and there was still so much more to come.
