Things to see in Cusco, Peru

Cusco, Peru was a fun, and unexpected, gem to explore on my recent trip to Peru.

Plaza de Armans

The purpose of my trip to Peru was to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, but there was time on the front and back-ends of the trip to wander the streets of Cusco. There was so much to explore in Cusco that I wish I had booked additional time in the city.

Here are the things I managed to fit into my Cusco visit that I would recommend.

1. Sacred Valley Tour

If it's not already part of your tour package, make sure you visit all of the Incan ruins in the community surrounding Cusco. It's hard to comprehend the expanse of the Incan empire and intricate and interconnected trade routes until you hop on a bus and explore.

Ollantaytambo ruins are incredible. I could have spent all day here.

See what I mean! Ollantaytambo

Sacsayhuaman is another must-see

2. San Pedro Market

I usually tell people if you want to experience the local flavor of a community in the US, go to Walmart. In lieu of a super-store, head to the local market. The San Pedro Market is a vibrant compilation of produce, meats, cheeses, food vendors, and an assortment of souvenirs. Best prices in town, from what I could tell. I got a pair of silver earrings for about $18, and a kilogram of coffee for $5, just for a few examples.

3. San Blas

For a stroll through a more affluent neighborhood with a Bohemian flare, head to the San Blas neighborhood. There was an open-air craft market on that particular Saturday in the square. If you're feeling energetic, head up the hill and wander through the streets. To take the exploration to new heights, take the steep (understatement) stairs to the Cristo Blanco statue perched on the hillside surrounding Cusco.

If I had more time in Cusco, there was so much more I wanted to explore!
