Day 48 - Rough Roads
Day 48 - Bridgeport to Ann Arbor, MI - 86 miles - 1175 feet of elevation gain
The hotel this morning had a COVID breakfast, which was a small granola bar, a fruit cup, and a juice box. Really not enough to fuel us for the start of an 80+ mile day, so I made a plan to stop at McDonalds 10 miles down the road. After 48 days, it’s fun to switch things up every now and again. One gentleman was exiting McDonalds and asked “Where are you headed?” I responded “Delaware!” His face was priceless!
In PA we joke about having the worst roads in America, but after today, I’m fairly certain Michigan is in the running too. The roads from the onset were terrible. Crumbling, no shoulders, impatient drivers, potholes, gravel, cracks, and everything else that makes roads crappy, we experienced it today! There were sections that were fine, like the rail trail and a few other sections, but overall it was just a mess. The front of the line usually calls out debris or holes int he roads, but today it got to be too much and we had to hold on to the handlebars so as to not get knocked off by the bumps. I didn’t take too many pictures because I was busy!
We also had to detour from our original route because the road we were on turned to gravel. It was strange because the road seemed to be a main artery, but apparently they needed the blacktop for another road. In Ann Arbor, we passed the University of Michigan and I was tempted to yell “We are!”
Tomorrow we exit Michigan, it’s always fun crossing a state border, because it’s a reminder that we are making progress. In case you were wondering, we spent 13 days in Montana and 10 days in Michigan. Tomorrow is a short 53 miles, but then we have a 100+ mile day before our last rest day. These last days are going to go by so quickly, then it’s back to life in Lancaster!
